Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Birmingham Academy May 21 May 23, 2006

If you believe everything that you read or hear in the press, Yeah Yeah Yeahs are just about the coolest band around at the moment.
I've had their current album for a while and it's grown on me; I was looking forward to the gig by the time Sunday came around. I have to admit I haven't heard enough of them to be able to recognise all of the songs that they performed, particularly the older stuff, but nonetheless it was a great performance.
The band, or at least Helen O, have an energy that permeated the packed crowd to such an extent that I had to move for my own safety (wimp!!!). Packed in like sardines the whole crowd swayed, surged and bobbed as one as the band ripped through a lively opening.
The setlist, and I'm going to have to accept that this is right because I don't know all the songs was, in no particular order:
- Date With The Night
- Warrior
- Maps
- Bang
- Artstar
- Cheated Hearts
- Black Tongue
- Down Boy
- Phenomena
- Gold Lion
- Turn Into
- Honey Bear
- Y Control
- Dudley
(I've lifted that off the message board on the YYY's site, blame "nobaloney" if it's not right)
The support acts were a mixed bag, neither of whom I'd heard of before. Opening the show were Sean Na Na, who I liked, a traditional guitar band; and The Services, who I couldn't get into, two blokes with synthesizers and a cymbal.
All in all a good night out that would only have been better had I spoken to the hot girl stood behind me in the queue before the doors opened.
